In the kingdom of wonders, two little girls, a little cat, and a pink pig were walking happily in a forest. They were talking about a giant balloon man that they had seen in a market the day before. Lulu the cat jumped up and down, left and right, and all over. Sometimes she was chasing a fly, sometimes she was following a lizard, sometimes she was singing a wonderful meow meow song, and other times she would start a little playful fight with the pink pig. The pig, with his pink tail wagging, tolerated his bouncy cat friend even if he did walk closer to one of the little girls.
①“Bufa!” Suddenly a bigger cat appeared behind them. No one of them noticed her. They were too occupied in their own world. This cat…was Laughing Cat.
The bigger cat jumped from tree to tree after the company, trying to hide. She watched each of them in the little group with big cat eyes. “That little cat,” she thought, “seems so cute. Hmmm. I need to get closer.”
Laughing Cat made a big leap forward and landed in a tree out ahead of the group of friends, quickly hiding behind the leaves. Now she could see the little cat clearly. The little cat had two big black eyes. They are so big and so black that they almost seemed to be too big for her small little face. Too cute! Her head twisted from side to side, looking at everything, wanting to see everything there was to see.
Inside of Laughing Cat her heart melted to watch the cute little cat. She suddenly had an urge to take the little cat, and keep the little cat for herself. Silently and swift, she jumped out from behind the leaves, flew over the company of friends, grabbed the little cat, and then “Bufa!” Laughing Cat disappeared into the forest.
The two little girls and the pig stared into the forest in the direction where Laughing Cat had disappeared. She was gone, and so was little Lulu Cat.
“They seemed to be so happy,” the bigger cat thought. “With this cute little cat, I will be happy too.”
① “Bufa!” is the sound it makes when something suddenly appears or disappears.
“Who are you?” Lulu Cat was so confused. Who was this big cat? “Why did you capture me?”
“You can call me Aunty Laughing,” Laughing Cat said. “From now on, you will be mine. You will go everywhere I go. We will do everything together.”
Apart from this, the Laughing Cat didn’t say another word for the whole day, no matter how Lulu Cat asked. At night, she petted Lulu until she felt asleep.
After that, one big, one little, the two cats were always together. The Laughing Cat liked her little stolen Lulu Cat very much. She played with her, showed her off to her friends, and petted her to sleep every night. She was very happy with her Lulu Cat.
But at the same time, deep in her mind, Laughing Cat always heard another voice whispering: “What if someone else sees Lulu and likes her? They will take her away from you.” Laughing Cat became very worried.
As the days went by, these two cats become closer and closer. Laughing Cat’s favor of Lulu also grew stronger and stronger, as did her fear of losing her. Until one day, she couldn’t stand the constant fear and worrying anymore, and decided to do something about it.
She thought about her old friend, the Pirate Dog.
The Pirate Dog had been a pirate on the sea and now lived in the land of dragons. For many years now he had been practicing the art of mastering magic and power. Evil Cat thought of a plan. “I will ask him to put a spell on Lulu Cat, so that she can never be taken away from me by anyone!”
Thinking about her plan, Laughing Cat smiled happily.
The two cats went on their journey. For several months, they climbed through winding mountains, hopped from tree to tree, crossed running rivers, lived in numerous villages, and finally, after all of that, they arrived at the foot of the Windy Mountain.
High up on the mountain they found a humble wooden hut. This was where the Pirate Dog lived. Laughing Cat could smell the familiar aroma of fresh earth and growing things. Behind the hut, in the mango forest, is the Pirate Dog standing next to a pile of mangos. He is a dog who has managed to find peace with himself. He is hard as stone, but very wise.
Laughing Cat signaled Lulu Cat to come with her as she went up to Pirate Dog. “Do you remember that you still own me a favor?”
The Pirate Dog nodded.
“Now I know what this favor will be,” demanded Laughing Cat with a smile. “I love this Lulu Cat very much. I never want to be separated from her. Please put a spell on her so that no one can take her away from me.”
Pirate Dog looked at Lulu Cat. She was cute. She might be the cutest cat that he had ever seen, in this land or any other that he had ever travelled. Her wide eyes were pathways to her curious soul. Pirate Dog could see why Laughing Cat loved her so much. But apart from this, he could also sense something else in this little cat, something special, something he couldn’t exactly put a name to.
So he hesitated. He had a promise to fulfill for Laughing Cat, a favor that he must carry out. But he could also see that the Lulu Cat didn’t want to be trapped with Laughing Cat for all time. Her heart was looking to get back to something else. Once upon a time, Pirate Dog had been evil. He didn’t care what he did or who he did it to. But now he knew better. Now it was against his beliefs to force another being against their free will.
Pirate Dog thought about this. “Both Laughing Cat and Lulu Cat are from the same species, and yet they are so different. What force has brought these two creatures together, and what has brought them to me?” Lost in his thoughts, he gazed into the vast mango trees that surrounded them. After a long while, he had an idea. Looking back at the two cats, he said, “Yes, I will put the spell on Lulu Cat for you. But, the spell cannot be put in one day. It will take time. I will need this little cat to stay here until the spell is done."
The next morning Lulu Cat rolled awake. She stretched, and she stood up, and she looked out into the mists hovering through the mango trees. The dawn light, the cold fresh air and the stillness of the mountain made Lulu Cat happy. “It’s a beautiful morning. I shall start a new adventure today.” She smiled and jumped out of the hut, wondering about the spell the Pirate Dog promised to do for Laughing Cat. “What spell is it?” she wondered.
Walking into the mango forest, she saw that the Pirate Dog was already waiting for her. Beside him was the pile of mangos that she had seen the day before. “They are shinning,” Lulu Cat said in amazement.
“Pick one and try to stand on it.” The Pirate Dog pointed to the pile of mangos. “Remember, once you pick a mango, you will have to always try to stand on the same one. Make your choice carefully.”
With her little head slightly twisted to one side, Lulu Cat approached the mangos. Sensing her coming, the mangos scattered into small groups of two or three, and some individuals. Their skins started to shine more, and they jumped up and down, and they rolled around as they said over and over, “gui gui, gui gui gui gui!” They were so very much like Lulu Cat!
They were all different colors. Some were a fresh green, some were a rich yellow, and some were a deep orange. Two of them, laying behind all the others, shone with the color of gold. These ones didn’t move as much. They didn’t make a sound. They simply lay there, shining with their brilliant radiance.
As she walked around the mangos, Lulu saw one other. It lay on the ground away from the others, hidden next to a tree trunk. This one was all black. When Lulu Cat got closer this black mango rolled away around the tree trunk and disappeared from her view.
Among all of these mangos, Lulu Cat liked a small yellow one the most. This mango was about the same size as little Lulu was. He stayed by himself, jumping and rolling, and occasionally makes a little “gui gui.” It felt like he was smiling brightly at Lulu Cat. Looking at this mango, Lulu felt that her spirit had lighted up. This was the one!
She walked right up to this yellow mango and grabbed him. It rolled in her paws! It jumped in her hands! With all of its jumping and rolling, the mango was too difficult to get ahold of. It burst into a long series of “gui gui gui gui” like it was laughing at her!
Lulu Cat turned her head to Pirate Dog helplessly. What could she do?
“Come here,” he said to her. “I will teach you.”
At the end of the day, on her way to the hut, Lulu Cat was still wondering what kind of spell it was. Pirate Dog told her that this was a spell that could only work when she was standing on a mango. It didn’t seem to be working.
The whole day, she had done nothing but sit still with her eyes closed. Pirate Dog told her, just sit and do nothing. “Try to be aware of whatever comes to you. It could be the wind that sweeps over your face, it could be the touch of your skin to the ground, it could be the sound that you hear, or it could be a thought that comes to your mind.”
Lulu Cat didn’t quite understand. “Is that it? Just know what’s happening at the moment?” She found a shady area to sit down, closed her eyes, and started to observe. “What can I hear at the moment?” she asked.
Suddenly, all the sounds came to her. The birds chirping in the forest. The mangos with their gui-gui-gui-ing. The wind blowing through the leaves. The insects singing in the grass. By knowing what sounds she was hearing, the whole universe quieted down, and the sounds she was observing became clearer and clearer. It was a wonderful feeling.
Out of nowhere, another thought came to her. “How is my hand doing?” She moved her attention to her hands. She could feel the gentle pressure and the soft touch of the ground under her paws. It gave a pleasant coolness to her body.
Just like that, she moved her attention from hand to leg, from chest to back, to almost all parts of her body. It was strange. She had never paid so much attention to her own body before. It was the same thing with her thoughts. She had never been aware of what she was thinking about before. Now, she noticed that Samak, Phyrum and the little pink pig were on her mind. The image of them walking in the sunny forest in the kingdom of wonders came to her mind. She missed them.
Day after day, Pirate Dog asked her to practice the same thing. At the end of her practice, he would ask her what she had noticed. Day by day, Lulu Cat was able to be aware of more feelings, sensations, sounds, and thoughts. One day, she told Pirate Dog that she could be aware of the sounds she heard, the images she saw, the sensations she felt in her own body, her emotions and the thoughts in her mind, all at the same time!
Pirate Dog smiled. “Now try to stand on your mango again.”
Lulu Cat got her mango and found that the yellow of his skin had become even deeper. This time, as she got closer, the yellow mango seemed to calm down. His jumping and rolling became less, and his “gui-gui” voice got lower and lower. When Lulu Cat put her hands on him again, he was completely calm and quiet. It seemed that the souls of these two creatures were connecting, communicating, and bonding. Lulu Cat took hold of her mango. Confidently, she went to stand on him.
“Whoa!” she yelled, as she slipped off and fell to the ground again.
It was several months ago when Lulu Cat got ahold of her mango and tried to stand on him. After that she started to understand the meaning of Pirate Dog’s practice. With the practice, she felt a stronger and stronger calmness surrounding her. When she approached the yellow mango, he seemed to be affected by this profound calmness. She started to see and feel things in a clearer way. Through her contact with the mango, she sensed something nearby. She tried to see and to feel it more clearly, but she couldn’t. It was like there was a thick layer of mist and a long distance between her and the other presence.
With more practice, she felt the mist getting thinner and the distance becoming shorter. With more practice, she found that when she tried to stand on the mango, she was sensitive to the slightest movement. Sometimes, she even thought that the mango was helping her. When she was about to fall to the right, the mango would make a slight move to the left, so that Lulu Cat could find her balance and can keep up for a little longer each time. The practice was difficult, but she could now see she was progressing.
Lulu Cat had lost all track of time. It must be a long, long time ago when she arrived here. This day, as with every day, she went to the mango forest in the early morning, practiced doing nothing but observing for several hours, and then approached her yellow mango. Pirate Dog walked after her. He knew that this day would come, but he didn’t expect it to come so fast. Standing on a mango is an ancient master class practice, and only a very few creatures in the world have mastered it in all of history.
This time, Lulu Cat stood on her yellow mango. She was calm, happy and excited. “It’s time to tell her the truth,” he thought.
“Lulu,” Pirate Dog said. “The mango you’re standing on is a magic mango. It’s one of the magical and spiritual creatures in the land of dragons. The day you master the art of standing on a Magic Mango is the day that you are free. Today, you choose. You can choose to be with Laughing Cat or wander to wherever you want. This mango will take you to every single part of the world. He will guide you and protect you."
Lulu Cat was confused. She liked Laughing Cat. They had been very close for years, almost like mother and daughter. She didn’t want to be kidnapped by another creature and be brought to something unknown. But now, there was another option. She was strong, and she was free. She would love to fly back to the kingdom of wonders to see Samak, Phyrum, and the pink pig. But at the same time, she dreamt of visiting every single part of the world and doing whatever she wanted.
With the mango, she walked to the humble wooden hut and saw Laughing Cat. Yes, the spell was done. She was powerful enough now that no one would ever be able to take her away from Laughing Cat. But she choose to leave. Just the same as it was with Evil Cat, the world of her Aunty Laughing was too small for her. She wanted to see the bigger world. She wanted to be free.
Before she left, Pirate Dog shouted to her, “Don’t lose your pure heart.” That was what he had sensed that was special about Lulu Cat. “Only someone with a pure loving heart can be the master of the Magic Mango. If you lose your heart, the mango will leave you.”
“Bufa!” With Laughing Cat and Pirate Dog’s sights on them, Lulu Cat and the Magic Mango disappeared into the mists…
